Notes and Editorial Reviews

Beethoven's op. 1 trios have never had it so good. Coming on the heels of the superb Vienna Trio for Nimbus (see my citation in this issue's Want List), this initial release, tagged "Volume I, " is thus the start of what promises to be an imposing traversal of the composer's piano trios. The Parnassus group digs into the music with a pointed blend of assertiveness and control. Tempos are aptly animated, suggesting the outgoing confidence of this young lion of a composer, and rhythm is supple but never too free, underscoring the tight artistic rein that he exerted. Complementing their playing is magnificent engineering. For one thing, its wide dynamic range captures the marked piano-forte contrast in which Beethoven delighted and Read more that the Parnassus projects so well. In addition the microphone seems to have been placed just close enough to suggest an apt chamber-music intimacy without capturing the heavy breathing of the musicians, which, in some productions, can sound like an additional instrument. In short these performances are as good as any to be had of this repertoire. All exposition repeats are observed.
