This selection was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for "Best Choral Performance."
Sir John Eliot Gardiner, the Monteverdi Choir, and English Baroque Soloists honored the 250th anniversary of the death of Bach with a unique project. In an unprecedented series of performances, Gardiner and company presented all of Bach's church cantatas by performing them on each of the liturgical feast days for which they were written. The result of this epic endeavor was a series of recordings on the Archiv label called the "Bach Cantata Pilgrimage."
This recording presents four of Bach's cantatas for Christmas. In Bach's day there were three official Christmas festival days and this recording offers cantatas for each of those days. These are
Read more marvelously festive works that feature some of Bach's most extroverted music. The Cantata BWV 63, "Christen, atzet diesen Tag," opens with an giddy chorus accompanied by trumpets, trombones and timpani--it's breathlessly exciting music. Bach was arguably the greatest contrapuntist ever and his Cantata BWV 64, "Sehet, welch eine Liebe hat uns der Vater erzeiget," features some complex fugal passages in the work's opening chorus where Gardiner's instrumentalists have an opportunity to shine, especially the oboists who play the brilliant obbligato parts in BWV 133, "Ich freue mich in dir."
