Notes and Editorial Reviews
These are delightful, intelligent and witty performances of some very attractive music. Hummel’s career ranged from his beginnings as a child prodigy and pupil of Mozart in 1780s Vienna to an honoured old age in Goethe’s Weimar of the 1830s, with all that went between in some of Europe’s most turbulent years. As far as music was concerned, there was, for a start, Beethoven, with whom Hummel had slightly awkward relations. The Op. 12 work is fresh and untroubled, taking delight in the easy mastery of counterpart that was one of Hummel’s qualities, and the Beaux Arts Trio play it with a lively sense of enjoyment that suits it ideally. At the other end of his career, he still had the quick ear for instrumental textures that can invite the

sense of humour which has the players almost sending up the bass grunts in the Andante, before leaping into a sparkling account of the so-called Rondo alla russa.
Hummel was not a profound composer, but he was an immensely talented one and the variety of his invention is remarkable. He never forgot Mozart, as can be heard in the G major Trio of 1811, and he kept an ear on current developments without changing his essentially classical approach to music. Romantic ideas were accommodated rather than imitated or seriously taken up. The Beaux Arts players understand the balance well, and do excellent justice to a composer who earns better attention today. There is a great deal of pleasure to be had from these engaging performances of some charming music.'
