Notes and Editorial Reviews

First-rate solo singing from a top-flight team, plenty of cut and thrust, great athleticism and expressive weight in the big choruses, and well-audible inner detail in the orchestral playing of the period-instrument band; this is a recording that takes you to the heart of the music.

Compact and direct.  January 15, 2014 By n. nagaoka (hammond, IN) See All My Reviews "Tempo is fastest out of all the Mozart Requiem I have heard to date but it does not sound hurried in any way. Clear diction on vocals gives direct communication. Economically played but gives off a sense of honesty. Rex Tremendae does not have the usual scale but I found just as powerful and poignant. Chorus maintains delicacy and a decent amount of transparency just for the right effect. The best rendition of Lacrimosa in terms of depicting pain and sorrow. It has the feel of *judgement day*. Such a simple rendition stripped of all luxuries yet this set gets directly to the heart. This is a completely opposite from Karajan set in that the music does not provide any comfort. Rather letting you go through the pain. The sound quality wise, this is a pretty good reissue based on an excellent mid 80's Philips digital recording. Clear but keeping tonal balance natural and has very little distortion. Voices are close mic'd and intimate. Not much ambient air coming through but it is well balanced top to bottom." Report Abuse
