Notes and Editorial Reviews

The title “Friends of Schubert” is very inviting, and one can give latitude where the truth is stretched some because of the interesting material it promises. It must be admitted, however, that if the future revolutionary Josef Tomashoviz was present at Schubert’s funeral, he must have been accompanied by his mother, as he had only reached the tender age of five. Perhaps 18-year-old Albert Tonitz was nearby. Nevertheless, the material we find on this disc is interesting indeed, if only as a comparison between the talents of these composers and the genius of Schubert.

Most beautiful is the seamless ensemble singing of the male quartets. The voices are generally quite pleasant, and tenor Read more Bernhard Berchtold distinguishes himself as a polished and forthright artist in his solo singing of Tonitz’s Weiter geh ich, immer weiter. The instrumental playing is stylish and compelling, especially that of director Wolfgang Brunner, although it seems that he sees this Hausmusik danced with wooden shoes, but perhaps it was often the case.

As this is a collection of live broadcasts, the sound ambience varies, but is never ideal. Generally, there is an overabundance of reverberation, giving the feeling of listening from the back row of a live hall, but one still has the sense of intimacy that most of these works require.
