Notes and Editorial Reviews

In an earlier review of Korngold's Op. 6 (written for Carl Flesch and Artur Schnabel), I claimed that if a more skillfully crafted, melodically inventive, and emotionally three-dimensional sonata for violin and piano by a 15-year-old composer exists, I had not heard it. The same goes for the D major Piano Trio from Korngold's 12th year, which easily is the boldest Op. 1 Piano Trio before or since Beethoven's group of three. The best way to communicate both works' unfettered musicality is simply to keep the show moving, so to speak, and play full out. And that's precisely what violinist Andreas Röhn and colleagues do. String vibrato is generous yet never cloying, while climaxes surge with cumulative power but without a trace of bombast. If you missed this release on Calig (and no doubt most of us did!), indulge yourself now.
