The same goes for Divertimento, where the Bournemouth Symphony players don't match the edginess of the Israel Philharmonic for Bernstein. However, Alsop's striving to balance all the score's disparate elements gives the piece a satisfying wholeness that reveals its quality as well as its inventiveness. The Bournemouth string players' warm tone caresses the winsome strains of Facsimile, bringing to mind the more placid passages of West Side Story. Throughout Alsop displays a highly refined sense of rhythm that invigorates the music's underlying pulse. Overall, this is a compelling program, well recorded and certainly one to win new fans to Bernstein's "other" music.
