Notes and Editorial Reviews

Marin Alsop's nicely varied Bernstein program presents an interesting cross-section of the composer's theater and concert music. The Serenade is one of the composer's most accomplished and popular works in the latter category, and Alsop makes it easy to understand why in her smart and engaging rendition, where she makes much of the music's highly contrasted moods and styles. Philippe Quint is of the same mind as his brilliant and polished playing alternates from sinewy to serene, while always maintaining beautiful, full tone. Bernstein's own versions (with the New York and Israel Philharmonics) are more gutsy, and they play up the jazz elements more convincingly, but Alsop's is a nice modern alternative.

The same goes
Read more for Divertimento, where the Bournemouth Symphony players don't match the edginess of the Israel Philharmonic for Bernstein. However, Alsop's striving to balance all the score's disparate elements gives the piece a satisfying wholeness that reveals its quality as well as its inventiveness. The Bournemouth string players' warm tone caresses the winsome strains of Facsimile, bringing to mind the more placid passages of West Side Story. Throughout Alsop displays a highly refined sense of rhythm that invigorates the music's underlying pulse. Overall, this is a compelling program, well recorded and certainly one to win new fans to Bernstein's "other" music.
