Notes and Editorial Reviews
Common wisdom has it that the apple that was Franz Xaver Mozart fell quite far from the tree of his father, Wolfgang Amadeus. But based on this enchanting new CD featuring Mozart fils’s songs, that apple was closer to the trunk than many of us thought. As lovingly sung by the ideal Barbara Bonney, who has happily assumed the mantle of Franz Xaver’s eloquent champion, we discover in his songs a composer who is not unworthy of his name and whose work stands comfortably with others of this genre including Weber and, later, Schubert.
Particularly outstanding are the heartfelt Der Vergnügsame, the light and delightful Maylied, and Aus dem Französischen des J. J. Rousseau, which could easily pass for minor Schubert. Then

there is the haunting An die Bäche and Le Baiser, two songs that render honor to the name of Mozart.
Barbara Bonney is one of my favorite singers – she has a beautiful soprano voice that shines brightly with an inner light, and anything she undertakes is bathed in it and with her special grace. Here she is in exceptional form, clearly loving her task of discovery. Her pianist, Malcom Martineau, is an expert accompanist. Facing facts, we don’t really need any new recordings of Schubert, Schumann or Strauss lieder, as there are so many superb such recitals in the catalog, so it is doubly exciting to find a new collection of 19th-century lieder that we’ve not heard before, and by a Mozart no less! Gorgeous sound and excellent notes: this is an outstanding album that may start out as a curiosity but will become a cherished treasure for those who are fortunate enough to acquire it.
