Notes and Editorial Reviews

Leonardo Leo was one of the leading Neapolitan composers of his day, particularly in the genres of theatre and church music. He studied with Nicola Fago at the Conservatorio S. Maria della Pieta del Turchini. Leoís first opera in 1714, Il Pisistrato, was received with acclaim and from 1720 until his death he received a continuous stream of commissions for operas in Naples, Rome, Venice, Bologna, Turin and Milan. He was also a prominent teacher and held positions at the Conservatorio (where he eventually succeeded Fago). One of his main goals was to reform church music in Naples, which created a rivalry between him and the other great Neapolitan composer of church music in that city, Francesco Durante. Among his instrumental works the most Read more prominent were the six Cello Concertos and the Concerto for Four Violins. Leoís style bridges the quintessentially baroque traditions of Mancini, Porpora and Fago, and the more ìmodernî trends that would be introduced by Pergolesi and others of a subsequent generation. These works are rich in contrapuntal detail and virtuoso writing (these were originally written for Don Marzio Carafa di Maddaloni, the Neapolitan patrician who already had sponsored Pergolesi). These are works which will appeal to the Baroque specialist who enjoys the pageantry of Handelís music along with the distinctive stylings of the Neapolitan school. Read less
