Notes and Editorial Reviews

Now here's a recital program you can sink your teeth into. Josef Suk and Rudolf Firkusny offer choice items on this well-filled disc, taken from a live performance, recorded in excellent sound. First up is Dvorák's delightful Op. 100 Violin Sonatina, which features many of the same "American" folk elements found in his New World Symphony and String Quartet No. 12. Dvorák's younger compatriot Janácek stays closer to home in his rhapsodic sonata, while Suk and Firkusny revel in the music's disjointed rhythms, unorthodox harmonies, and novel colors.

The duo brings the same high energy to Brahms' Violin Sonata No. 3, giving the music an impulsive flow

Suk and Firkusny save their best for last in Beethoven's Violin Sonata No. 10, offering an exquisitely graceful rendering of the Mozartean first movement, while playing the remainder with high-spirited virtuosity. The audience response to this splendid music making is predictably enthusiastic--and yours will be too. [10/17/2005]
