Notes and Editorial Reviews

Boris Berezovsky offers a live program of Chopin Etudes placed alongside Leopold Godowsky's infamously difficult Chopin Etudes transcriptions, allowing listeners to experience Godowsky's textural elaborations in the context of the originals. Not only does Berezovsky's super technique surmount Godowsky's fiendish challenges, but also the presence of an audience seems to trigger the pianist's adrenaline reserves. As a consequence, the galloping gait of Godowsky's "White Key" and "Tarantella" Black Key Etude studies proves drier and edgier than Marc-André Hamelin's suaver studio counterparts, while Op. 10 Nos. 4 and 12 for the left hand alone also transpire with a higher danger quotient. By contrast, Berezovsky piles Read more through the contrary-motion arpeggios of Godowsky's deliciously thick Op. 10 No. 1 metamorphosis, whereas Hamelin brings more breadth, color, and textural variety to the mix. And Berezovsky's smoothly dispatched Godowsky Op. 25 No. 1 significantly differs from Jorge Bolet's slower, line-oriented interpretation.

Curiously, Berezovsky holds back in the Badinage (the Black Key and Butterfly Etudes combined) as if he fears hitting a wrong note. However, Berezovsky's renderings of Chopin's originals boast far more poetry, freedom, and color than his flashy but relatively two-dimensional studio recordings. At the same time, he adheres closer to Chopin's markings, such as Op. 25 No. 5's varied articulations in the opening section. Like Vladimir Horowitz and Byron Janis, Berezovsky is one of the few pianists on disc to play the Black Key etude's final descending octaves in strict tempo. The gorgeous Snape Maltings acoustic flatters Berezovsky's sonority to more pleasing effect than the dry, constricted sonics of his recent Rachmaninov Preludes cycle. Highly recommended.
