To play Domenico Scarlatti’s keyboard sonatas on a double manual accordion is not as strange as it may seem. After all, the accordion is a keyboard instrument, and historically it has been used as a sort of portable organ, in rural or maritime settings, where none was available.

Rättyä, who formerly arranged and recorded Bach’s Goldberg Variations (Ondine ODE 1209-2) here repeats the feat with 16 of Scarlatti’s sonatas, including K 30, commonly known as the “Cat’s Fugue.” The results are convincing. I do not feel that the music has been compromised in any significant way by being treated in this manner. The accordion actually has the potential to color the music more than the harpsichord, and Rättyä’s performances are so varied and sensitive that monotony, or too much of a good thing, is not a danger. Part of the reason for this, I think, is the fact that an accordion “breathes,” unlike a harpsichord, a fortepiano, or a modern piano. Indeed, Rättyä’s playing breathes in and breathes out, and that quality serves to humanize these innovative readings. They are more mellow than brilliant, and when they are brilliant, they are never brilliant for brilliance’s sake. For example, Rättyä plays the aforementioned “Cat’s Fugue” at a truly moderate tempo (and Scarlatti’s designation is Moderato ), and one hears how he structures the work with terraced dynamics and arch-shaped phrases. The following Sonata, K 12, is played with appropriate dash, but Rättyä never lets his technical abilities overshadow his musicality.

I’ve heard Scarlatti on a synthesizer and on a guitar, as well as on the more traditional instruments, but this is my maiden voyage hearing his music on an accordion. It works. I’d be interested to hear Rättyä turn his attention to other works from the Baroque era.
