Notes and Editorial Reviews

This is the third release from the extraordinary Trio Mediaeval. Like the previous two, this one contrasts a contemporary composer, Sungji Hong, with a two-voice conductus by Pérotin, an anonymous three-voice French conductus, Veni creator spiritus , and a series of pieces from 13th-century England. Obviously, all of the old music heard here would only have been sung by female voices in a convent, if then, which is neither here nor there, and the mixing of a male voice with female voices in O Maria, stella maris would never have happened at all. More Read more important is the way these singers bring this remote and intensely beautiful music to life. As before, the smoothness and virtually perfect blending of the voices delights the ear at every turn. What is also remarkable about the group?s performances is the way the words and the nature of the music seem to spark a personal note within what is, by design, fundamentally impersonal music. Hong?s setting of the ordinary is firmly based on earlier models, but?by comparison with the rest of the music here?both more harmonically advanced and considerably more contrapuntal than the older music. The sound is, like the performances, utterly luminous. Texts for all the music performed except that of the Mass. No translations, but it doesn?t really matter. This is an outstandingly beautiful disc.
