DUFAY Motets: Salve flos/Vos nunc. Cantilena motets: Flos florum. Imperatrix angelorum. Inclita stella maris. Ave virgo quae de caelis. Gaude virgo. Hymns: Urbs beata. Ave maris stella. Jesu corona virginum. Antiphons: Ave regina caelorum (iii). Anima mea liquefacta est Ens Musica Nova ZIG-ZAG TERRITOIRES ZZT 050301 (56:09 )

There are similarities and differences between these two new discs. The first is titled “Motets, Vol. 1,” but it includes antiphons as well. The second is titled “11 Motets, Hymns, Antiphons,” duplicating six pieces from the first list and adding a chant antiphon Ave regina caelorum and an anonymous Regina saeculi/Reparatrix Maria (mistitled in the contents), nowhere identified or sourced. The first is a more generous collection and includes instruments, while the second is sung a cappella .

A telling indication of the competition between the two discs is their agreement on beginning their programs with the motet in honor of the city of Florence, Salve flos Tuscae gentis , which is included in Paul van Nevel’s collection of the complete isorhythmic motets (24:1) and Helga Weber’s larger collection of all the motets (IHW 3.108). It also led off a collection titled “Music in Florence” (Christophorus CHR 77132) and concluded the Hilliard Ensemble’s Dufay disc, the only other unaccompanied performance (11:2). It was first recorded in the shellac era. While most writers date this work during Dufay’s visit for the dedication of the cathedral (1436), David Fallows places it much later, next to the last two isorhythmic motets ever written. After hearing Cantica Symphonia’s solemn performance, the considerably faster rendition by Ensemble Musica Nova sounds right, though it is the fastest of all versions. This is not, after all, a sacred work but one that celebrates the city of Florence. The other five duplicated pieces are not as different in tempo, but in no case is Musica Nova slower than Cantica Symphonia.

In the end, one might choose between these two fine discs on the basis of instrumental accompaniment vs. a cappella performance. I would not want to discourage anyone from choosing either of these discs, since there are so few alternatives. Both are typical of the best in production and design, and while both offer texts and translations, Glossa directs the user to their Web site to obtain the translations. Dufay aficionados will probably want both discs.
