A Personal Testament from a Fine GuitaristMay 23, 2014By Dean Frey See All My Reviews"Im a big fan of guitarist Jason Vieaux, especially his recordings of South American composers and Bach. His new CD is really outstanding, so much more than just a collection of encore pieces. In his fine liner notes Vieaux shows a personal connection to each piece. He explains how particular composers and performers have helped him perfect his own art as a guitarist. My favourite pieces in this collection include Tom Jobims Felicidade arranged by Roland Dyens, the Ponce version of the classic Mexican tune Por Ti Mi Corazon, and Vieauxs own arrangement of Duke Ellingtons In a Sentimental Mood. The Ellington piece is cleverly designed for solo guitar, and Vieaux provides the proper amount of swing as well as the requisite elegance. I enjoyed listening to this track along with Dukes own recordings while I read Terry Teachouts excellent new biography Duke: A Life of Duke Ellington."Report Abuse
Very Nice VieauxApril 2, 2014By Due Fuss See All My Reviews"Very solid all-around performance here by Jason Vieaux. He provides a wide-ranging program of arrangements, guitar staples, and works by contemporary composers such as Leo Brouwer. It is unfair to judge a record by a different set aesthetic criteria than is intended by performer, but since my interests lean more toward the acerbic avant garde (not exclusively), I would have appreciated perhaps some works by composers less steeped in maintaining traditions. This is of course a subjective value judgment, and I cannot fault Vieaux for his own choices and aesthetic goals. That said, Vieaux offers a great recital with skilled and sensitive playing. The recordings sounds warm and clear with nice balance."Report Abuse
This is how it's done.February 10, 2014By Oscar O. Veterano See All My Reviews"Jason Vieaux - PLAY - Azica Records After nearly a dozen commercially issued CDs and having earned an enviable international reputation as a concert artist, Jason Vieaux has emerged as one of Americas, and the worlds, premiere classical guitarists. Play, his newest effort, is a beautifully recorded collection of 20th century guitar music, with compositions by a whos who of European, North and South American guitarist/composers. Ranging from the classicism of Tarrega and Segovia to the more modernist approaches of Andrew York and Leo Brouwer, Mr. Vieauxs choice of repertoire showcases the full capabilities of his instrument, along with his own impeccable taste and flawless, seemingly effortless technique. Topped off by his own arrangement of Duke Ellingtons In a Sentimental Mood, Jason Vieauxs latest recording Play is a must-have for students and fans of classical guitar; it is, however, even more highly recommended to the general listener who may not be aware of just how entertaining this kind of music can be in the hands of a master. Highest possible recommendation 10 out of 10 Oscar O. Veterano"Report Abuse
