Notes and Editorial Reviews

The real “rarities” in this release are three items previously unavailable in long-playing format: a 1947 Beethoven Op. 10 No. 3 Sonata (including alternate takes of the final two movements) that proves sonically and interpretively superior to its later EMI mono LP counterpart; a fastidiously ornamented 1951 Mozart K. 570 Sonata; and a rather earthbound 1950 Chopin Fourth Scherzo. The remaining items represent major works and shorter “loose ends” omitted from the 2011 EMI Arrau Icon box set, and showcase the pianist as a young and often impetuous firebrand, rather than the rhetorical old philosopher we know from his later recordings.
