Sigiswald Kuijken continues his quest to convince recalcitrant skeptics (such as yours truly) that the only way to sing Bach is with one soloist per part. It’s not going to happen, but he is well on his way to convincing this listener that it is undoubtedly one way to sing Bach. It helps (or should I say it’s essential) to have a strong cohort of soloists to bring to the attempt, and Kuijken has just that. Alto Petra Noskaiová, tenor Christoph Genz; and bass Jan Van der Crabben are Kuijken regulars. Noskaiová, in fact, has sung in all the series discs that have reached my desk; Genz and Van der Crabben are not far behind. All fully justify the maestro’s confidence in them, and Noskaiová rewards him with an outstanding performance in her solo Cantata 54. Kuijken is more adventurous with his sopranos. Siri Thornhill makes her third appearance, this time to good effect. Elisabeth Hermans and Yeree Suh are newcomers, but neither has been given a solo role. Hermans handles her duet in BWV 168 very well; Suh is limited to the closing four-part chorale of No. 134. The excellence of La Petite Bande is a given, and Kuijken’s direction is, as always, impeccable. The program has a catch-all, fill-in-the-blanks aspect. After cantatas 186 and 168, for the seventh and ninth Sundays after Trinity, respectively, Kuijken jumps back to the third day of Easter with No. 134, and further back to Oculi Sunday—in case you didn’t know, the Third Sunday in Lent—for the brief (three-movement) BWV 54. [Note: Another chronology assigns No. 54 to Trinity 9, more fitting for this program.] Kuijken scores again. Warmly recommended.
