Notes and Editorial Reviews

Placido Domingo – The Verdi Opera Collection brings together the world-renowned tenor’s classic RCA and Sony Classical recordings of six complete Verdi operas. The music of Verdi has played a special role in Domingo’s career: he made his operatic debut in Mexico City in 1959 in a minor role in Rigoletto. Two years later, his first major role was Alfredo in La Traviata. Domingo soon established himself as the world’s leading Verdi tenor thanks to a unique combination of warmly radiant tone, charismatic stage presence and impeccable musicianship that have enabled him to master a broader repertoire than any other tenor in history.

Five of the recordings included in The Verdi Opera Collection date from the first two decades of
Read more Domingo’s international career, 1969 to 1978. The sixth, a relative rarity in the Verdi canon, Luisa Miller, was recorded in 1991. Four of the six operas are conducted by James Levine, the New York Met’s long-time Music Director, and the other two are conducted by Zubin Mehta and Erich Leinsdorf.

Domingo is joined by one of the most legendary sopranos of all time, Leontyne Price, for Il Trovatore, Aida, and La Forza del Destino. By 2001, Domingo’s repertoire included eighteen of Verdi’s twenty-eight operas, most notably Otello, whose title role is widely regarded as the summit of the Italian tenor repertoire.

Placido Domingo is a legend. One of the finest and most influential singing actors in the history of opera, he is also a conductor and a major force as an opera administrator in his role as general director of two companies: Los Angeles Opera and Washington National Opera. As a singer, Domingo’s repertoire encompasses 134 roles, a number unmatched by any other tenor in history, with more than 3,500 career performances. He has won twelve Grammy Awards, and his recordings and appearances with Jose Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti as The Three Tenors represented one of the most successful musical partnerships of all time.
