Notes and Editorial Reviews

F. COUPERIN Trois Leçons de Ténèbres. Laetentur caeli. Venite exsultemus. Magnificat James Bowman, Michael Chance (ct); Mark Caudle (vdg); Robert King (org) HELIOS 55455 (63:09 Text and Translation)

I missed this the first time it came around ( Fanfare 15:6) and I don’t have most of the more recent issues of the famous Three Lessons of Tenebrae for comparison, so I have to go back to Jean-Christophe Frisch on K617 Read more (not reviewed here), Gérard Lesne on Harmonic (not reviewed here), Mieke van der Sluis (14:3), and Emma Kirkby (3:5). While I heartily approved of the last two when they were new, Gérard Lesne made an incomparable version that has not been widely available, the only version to follow each lesson with the correct chant responsory. (The wonderful Harmonic Classics label works or used to work out of a seaport on the coast of Brittany.) Short of that, this is a worthy interpretation, filled out with two motets and a Magnificat for full value. There was a time when James Bowman and Michael Chance were not numbered among my favorite countertenors, but this time they sing very well together. At a more modest price, this will please most buyers.

FANFARE: J. F. Weber
