Jean Danton is a classically trained soprano who can also put a show tune across the footlights in fine style. Her diction is truly magnificent and she has the ability to embody the meaning of her text. Collaborative pianist Doug Hammer and jazz percussionist Steve Chaggaris complete the trio of musicians who offer this interesting rendition of familiar songs. Hammer and Chaggaris accompany Danton as she sings tunes from a variety of musical theater works. They range from Cole Porter classics such as “So in Love” from Kiss me Kate, “Love for Sale” from The New Yorkers , and “Just One of Those Things” from Jubilee , to “I’m not that Girl” from Stephen Schwartz’s Wicked , a show currently running on Broadway. Porter (1891–1964) had major successes in the 1930s and 40s. The stories of the shows would seem very old-fashioned today, but the lyrics of many of his songs, which he wrote himself, seem to be timeless. His 1948 offering, Kiss Me, Kate won the first Tony Award for Best Musical. Richard Rogers (1902–1970) and Oscar Hammerstein II (1895–1960) are represented by “If I Loved You” and “This Nearly Was Mine” from two of their oft-revived works, Carousel and South Pacific. Stephen Sondheim has composed meaningful music for the theater for more than 50 years. Here he is represented by the title song from Anyone Can Whistle, “Being Alive” from Company , “Move On” from Sunday in the Park with George , “No One is Alone” from Into the Woods, and “Not While I’m Around” from a work that is sometimes considered an opera, Sweeney Todd.

The only woman composer represented here is Lucy Simon who, together with Marsha Norman, wrote the 1991 Tony Award winner The Secret Garden . From the French composer Claude-Michel Schönberg’s Les Misérables , Danton sings “Bring Him Home”; and from Canadian composer Howard Shore’s Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, “Into the West.” From the works of British-born composer Rupert Holmes she sings the lovely “Moonfall” that is found in his 1985 Tony Award-winning musical Drood . Danton’s singing is by no means perfect. I wish she had supported some of her high tones with greater strength. A smoother legato would have been good, too, but her voice projects sincerity and a love for this form of music. She sings what she enjoys and her enthusiasm is contagious. There are few comparable recordings of this music because arrangements vary greatly. Barbara Cook sings some of the Sondheim and Rogers songs on her DRG recordings. On the Albany disc, the sound of both Danton and her accompanists is well balanced and clear. It is not a perfect recording, but it has soul and I think anyone who really appreciates the lyrics of these songs will enjoy Danton’s interpretations.
