A Very Satisfying Disc. September 1, 2012 By Richard F. Buckley (Jefferson Hills, PA) See All My Reviews "I am not ordinarily an opera fan. I enjoy orchestral music, and I don't care for some high-pitched girl screaming at me in some foreign language about some ill-fated plot which is totally irrational. However, there are exceptions. Rossini's overtures are one of them. I love his work! He writes everything with energy and gusto! I remember as a kid in the 40's being glued to the radio every night listening to The Lone Ranger with the William Tell Overture playing in the background. I truly believe that helped to form my love for classical music in the future when I matured. Riccardo Chailly, with his broad affinity for opera, is the perfect conductor to present this uplifting music. He properly translates the fire and brimstone present in Rossini's overtures. Similarly, the National Philharmonic, with its long history of operatic presentations, complements perfectly Chailly's expert direction. Together they offer all the excitement that Rossini had in mind when he composed this thrilling music. I hesitate to discuss individual cuts on this dramatic 2 CD set, because I am hard pressed to pick a few favorites. To my ears, every one of the overtures is equally exciting and very pleasing. You will have to listen and decide for yourself. I strongly suggest that you obtain these discs and do so soon. I promise that you won't regret it." Report Abuse
