Barber rereleased finally August 26, 2015 By Peter D. (Jersey City, NJ) See All My Reviews "For decades, Columbia/CBS/Sony/whatever sat on their huge catalog of historic recordings of and with American composers. I've been waiting decades for this Toccata Festiva to be released on CD: it was written for E. Power Biggs to play at the dedication of the Academy of Music's new organ, and the first performance also celebrated Ormandy's 25th anniversary of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Finally! It's convenient that Columbia and RCA are now one company, because the recordings of Thomas Schippers can also be included; Schippers had a special relationship with Barber. Having the Adagio in both the orchestral arrangement and in its String Quartet context points up the differences between them -- never mind that the quartet sounds like it was recorded in a bathtub. Recommended for every Barber fan." Report Abuse
