We had a string of Tallis motet programs some time ago (14:2, 14:5, 15:6), and more recently the composer’s complete works under Alistair Dixon on nine Signum discs. This stunning program includes such much-duplicated works as the magnificent Gaude gloriosa and two smaller works, Loquebantur variis linguis and O nata lux . The rest of the program consists of other fine works less often recorded. The shorter pieces, including five found in the Cantiones Sacrae of 1575, provide breathing room between the major works. This group made an admirable series of 21 discs for Gaudeamus, including the complete works of Ludford, Fayrfax, and Byrd (the last to be continued on their new label) as well as examples of several other 16th-century masters. After a gap of more than three years, Carwood has changed labels, dropping his long partnership with David Skinner, whose roles of music editor and booklet annotator have been assumed by Carwood. The advantage of this new disc, apart from the excellent choice of varied works, is the sound of Carwood’s ensemble. While English vocal ensembles have certain recognizable characteristics, they are not all alike. These singers respond to a special insight that Carwood shares with them. Along with the Signum set, this is a highlight of the Tallis year, recommended to anyone who is not in the market for the complete works. FANFARE: J. F. Weber |
