This Read more slim two-disc package is loaded. It contains all seven of Bach’s single-keyboard concertos and then, as a substantial bonus, two favorite Vivaldi violin concertos that Bach transcribed for a solo keyboard instrument, newly arranged for keyboard and chamber orchestra by Julia Zilberquit, the soloist in this release. Let me say that, while I prefer Bach on the harpsichord, I have no objections, practical or theoretical, to Bach on the piano. Trevor Pinnock’s recordings are my go-to versions of Bach’s concertos, but I also admire András Schiff’s way with them. Zilberquit’s performances will not change my preferences, but they will help me to re-examine them. Her playing comes across as completely authentic—precise and energetic but nuanced. They are pleasing and stimulating—and a reminder that the piano brings its singular virtues to Bach’s endlessly adaptable music.

Putting Bach aside—no small task—it’s the Vivaldi that intrigues this listener. The D-Minor Concerto (op. 3/11) was my introduction to Vivaldi—by way of Leopold Stokowski’s singular transcription—and if push came to shove it would probably be the last Vivaldi that I’d purge from my MP3 player if purging were in order. We’ve already established that I’m not averse to hearing this concerto in an altered form, but Zilberquit’s is a different species altogether. I like it! I can only hope that it finds its way into the repertory. Much the same can be said for the A-Minor Concerto (op. 3/6).

A warm recommendation, then, for Zilberquit and friends. They won’t get lost on my shelves.
