Notes and Editorial Reviews

The Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda, composed for the most prominent of Monteverdi's Venitian partons, the senator, Girolamo Mocenigo, was performed for the first time at the Mocenigo Palace near St Mark's Square, during the Carnival of 1624. Based on a passage from Torquato Tasso's Gerusalemme liberata, it is a crucial work in Monteverdi's output, partly because it is virtually the only clue we have of his approcah to music for dramatic performance between the two Mantuan operas and the two late Venetian ones. Moreover, the style that he so comprehensively introduces, the genere concitato, was closely bound up with his general thinking on the subject of musical rhythm, merely one aspect of his lifelong concern with the ability of Read more music to portray the full range of human experience.

In other words, the Combattimento is something of an oddity. An experimental piece which doesn't quite come off and is certainly difficult to perform. The real novelty is its structural organization, which differentiates between narrative and direct speech so that the main dramatic weight falls upon the Narrator. As if to emphasize the narrative element, Monteverdi uses a deliberately narrow vocal range, leaving all expressiveness, even pictorial effects, to the accompaniment... William Christie's approach is no less rhetorical [than Tragicomedia's], but he uses a smaller group of continuo instruments, has a keener sense of the overall architec ture of the piece, and he encourages his string players to explore the complete dramatic range of the writing, from long-breathed lyrical melodies to the sharp percussive sounds of battle in a more comprehensive way.

Any successful performance of the Combatthnento depends crucially upon the narrator... Christie's narrator is altogether introspective in approach, though nonetheless concentrated and tightly-focused in execution...
