Notes and Editorial Reviews

Paul O'Dette, the most admired American lutenist of our time, has been a busy man of late. His recordings, teaching engagements, and personal appearances would exhaust most people, but O'Dette seems to thrive on it all. At least, that is the evidence that emerges from this disc, a captivating collection of pieces recorded in California in 1990 and 1992. It is now exactly twenty years since I first heard O'Dette, on a wonderful recording of medieval dance music (Estampie, on the Reflexe label). Good as he was then, he was steadily grown as an artist. On this new disc of sixteenth-century Italian music, he goes from strength to strength.

The music on this disc is pretty luscious to begin with. Although it dates from the earlier
Read more decades of the sixteenth century, it is written in a style that long remained current throughout Europe; fans of Elizabethan music will feel at home with this musical language at once, even if totally unfamiliar with the Italian Renaissance. It combines a great and reassuring scenes of order and symmetry with liveliness and a folkish quality not found in sacred works of the period.

Francesco da Milano was a lutenist of unparalleled reputation in his time, and he left behind numerous excellent pieces for his instrument. They vary greatly in style and affect, but have in common their suitability as performance vehicles as well as practice pieces. Many are serene and relaxing, although there are more catchy ebullient numbers too, such as Milano's setting of the anonymous chanson “Pourquoy allez-vous seullette.“ His colleagues on this disc are perhaps a little less distinguished composers, but their works give considerable pleasure. The Saltarellos by Pietro Paolo Borrono are infectious dances, and there are lovely pieces by Marco da L'Aquila and Alberto da Ripa as well. Ripa's Fantasia VIII builds steadily in excitement, his Fantasia XXII is ambitious and impressive in structure, noble in sentiment and proportion. And L'Aquila's Ricercar #16 is filled with a hushed mystery, while his La Traditora #2 is irresistibly folkish and dancelike.

In a previous issue of Fanfare, one of my colleagues referred to O'Dette as “the world's finest lutenist,“ and this is hardly an absurd statement. (There are several others in his league, if none better.) What is undeniably true is that O'Dette is by far the best lutenist yet to appear in America, and we can claim few classical guitarists with his ability, and none who have had a greater impact in their field worldwide. O'Dette's secret lies in the alchemy of his wonderful technique mingled with deep curiosity and that mysterious thing called temperament. O'Dette's playing draws the listener in. What, we wonder, does this composer have to say? Well, plenty, as it turns out, all of it interesting, and delivered in a pleasing form. This disc is a must for all lute lovers. As usual with Harmonia Mundi, the sound is crystal clear and the production values excellent. O'Dette wrote his own program notes, and they could hardly be more interesting. Run out and grab this as soon as you can.
