The music in the second volume of the Naxos series of Lutoslawski's orchestral music spans 50 years. The early Symphonic Variations were sketched while Lutoslawski was still a student and completed in 1938. They are, like all of Lutoslawski's early music, firmly tonal and much indebted to Polish folk music for the melodic contours. This style would reach its apotheosis in the Concerto for Orchestra, found in Volume Five of this series. The Little Suite is one of the works, along with the 'Silesian Triptych' found in Volume Six, written in response to the crackdown on the arts that pervaded the Soviet Bloc in 1948. Both receive fine performances here.
The Symphony No. 2, from 1966-67, establishes the two-movement form also used in Symphonies Nos. 3 and 4. An introductory movement, here marked hesitant, is followed by a concluding movement that fulfills the promise of the first. Finally, the Piano Concerto of 1988, written for Krystian Zimmerman and recorded by him with the composer, is part of the composer's return to concertante writing that includes the works for solo violin on Volume One. The performances here are competitive, and the disc gives a surprisingly complete view of the composer's achievements.
