Notes and Editorial Reviews

"In his lifetime, Machaut's renown rested as much on his poetry as on his music and he himself, as the spiritual descendant of the trouveres, thought them inseparable. In his large-scale poem Remede de Fortune, musical settings intervene at key points as the Poet addresses his Lady, bewails his misfortune or is counselled by Hope (a synopsis of the poem's argument is included in the notes to this CD). The Remede songs are a compendium of Machaut's literary and compositional techniques, both old and new. A similar flexibility characterizes the PAN Ensemble's approach to performance. The polyphony comes off best because the musicians' exuberance is kept in focus by the constraints of ensemble. In Rose, liz, Dame, mon cuer and Dame, de Read more qui, the tone is darker and more melancholy than in the Gothic Voices anthology...the most striking track of all is undoubtedly the complaint Tels rit, urgently delivered with occasionally suspect pronunciation but a minimum of fuss by Michael Collver: this piece most clearly puts the case for the composer's poetic genius. In this sense, PAN do Machaut proud..."
