Notes and Editorial Reviews

It's when a disc like this appears on my desk that I begin to wonder exactly what it was I did in a previous life. It's not as though I've grown tired of Handel's famous suites, but I really like to hear them in the original scoring (in the case of the Fireworks Music, in both original scorings) or something close to it. I also tend to prefer recordings of the Water Music that are complete. There being no lack of excellent versions with either modern or period instruments, the present disc, which offers transcriptions for brass instruments—and a synthesizer no less—and excerpts of the Water Music, is not a prime candidate for unassigned listening time at this address.

That said, however, I'll confess that hearing the disc
Read more wasn't painful, at all. In fact, for the right audience this disc has plenty to offer. Start with the players, who are in top form; the performances are bright, lively, and consistently engaging. The transcriptions never quite convince me that Handel needed any help with his scoring, but the synthesizer is used to very good effect. There is the superb sound reproduction—warm, full, and brilliant. If you like the tuba, it comes through with soul-satisfying clarity. So the secret is, I guess, not to think of this as a composer disc but as a performer disc, and you should find it quite entertaining. And there are pieces by Purcell and Dowland that haven't been done to death. If you think you'd like it, try it—you probably will.
