Notes and Editorial Reviews

Originally written as a set of piano pieces, Mussorgsky’s splendid Pictures at an Exhibition translate the artistry of the composer’s friend Victor Hartmann into unforgettable music. Mussorgsky’s remarkable song cycles contrast encounters with death against the often uneasy world of children in The Nursery. Peter Breiner’s new orchestrations create a Pictures at an Exhibition for our times, achieving contemporary sounds through unusual instrumental combinations, right up to a spectacular Great Gate of Kiev performed by 104 musicians.  ACK! My ears! August 29, 2014 By William S. (Renton, WA) See All My Reviews "The best way to describe this transcription is "Stokowski on acid". Though there are insightful passages that enhance Mussorgsky's piano original, the overall treatment is so utterly over-the-top, that most of the time one is more (far more) aware of the orchestration than the music. The climax sounds as if Bernard Herrmann has wandered in from "Journey to the Center of the Earth". If you want a recording to show off your system, this (or the BD-Audio edition) might be a good choice. But I suspect Mussorgsky's corpse is spinning like a top." Report Abuse
