Notes and Editorial Reviews

"This cd relates, if indirectly, to Patrick O'Brians' "Aubrey-Maturin" novels which gave rise, in turn, to the film Master and Commander. Included are works of the sort that the novels' protagonists might well have encountered as they partook of London's musical life when not at sea. Haydn's "Drumroll" symphony comes from the decade before but had become a staple of London's concert scene by the first decade of the 19th century. And Clementi's "Great National" Symphony is a rousing paean to the successful might of the British Empire in those heady days of Nelson's great victory and the confirmation of England's domination of the seas. The second movement variations on "God Save the King" are both an expression of patriotic fervor and a Read more winning example of Clementi's compositional prowess as a central figure in London's musical life and one inexorably tied to his colleague Beethoven.
