Notes and Editorial Reviews

This is a production that stretches boundaries, as suggested by the description on the cover, “Scenes for speaking voice and cello.” Paul Griffiths is already well known as a critic (New York Times, among other publications) and writer on 20th-century music (biographer of Messiaen). In recent years, he has become evermore public as a creative collaborator; my most recent encounter with his work was the incisive and surrealistic libretto he wrote for Elliott Carter’s opera What Next? (ECM 1817). Frances-Marie Uitti is one of the leading European soloists on cello devoted to new music, and has collaborated with many of the leading European composers (Scelsi, Xenakis, Ferneyhough, and Kurtág, for example). She’s also a composing Read more performer in her own right, using special techniques she’s invented for her instrument, the most striking of which is a form of double-bowing that allows her to sustain continuous quadruple-stops (i.e., all four strings are bowed at once, from above and below). The notes suggest that the two have been developing this project since 1997.

Griffiths has derived the text, a series of 13 prose poems, from the literal words spoken by Ophelia in Hamlet. Into this source-set he repeatedly dips and draws out phrases that he can repeat and reorder. Uitti provides accompaniments that vary in terms of texture and timbre, and provide strong dramatic character, but also rarely have distinguishing thematic or motivic traits. Griffiths narrates throughout with precision and authority: he has a great classic English voice that would be right at home on stage or screen. The result is mysterious, moody, ruminative. The texts, while all using Shakespeare as a starting point, sound quite contemporary; indeed, Beckett seems even more of a reference here. The production is excellent, thanks as usual to Manfred Eicher in the control booth—the balance between voice and cello never obscures a word, and one often has the impression of eavesdropping onto confessions of painful intimacy. I was particularly struck by 12, where Uitti’s line provides a rich keening drone, and 15, where Griffiths’s whispered soliloquy is both seductive and chilling.

All in all, a very classy production: thoughtful, beautifully conceived and produced. Yet, in the end I’m left less than fully enthusiastic. It’s one of those things that simply are what they are, and either you love the concept or not. Perhaps if I were encountering this in some sort of semi-staged version, I might be a little more excited. And though it may just be pedantry on my part, I’d be intrigued to see the original Shakespeare texts—short of re-reading Hamlet—so as to compare them with Griffiths’s results (this is the sort of thing a Web site is great for.) As is, this seems in the tradition of the Hörspiel, the German audio-play that’s often an acquired taste for American listeners. It’s memorable, and immaculately rendered. I hope that my description allows readers to decide if they want to investigate or not.
