Notes and Editorial Reviews

One of the negative aspects of the modern era of classical music recording is that it encourages artists to edit their recordings to death, purging the tape of all inconsistencies of pitch or sound, but also purging it of character and cohesion. The few live recordings that exist are refreshing and exciting, though maybe not as polished. Particularly notable are Bernard Haitink's live Mahler recordings and the Emerson Quartet/Rostropovich recording of the Schubert Cello Quintet.
This Solti celebration album follows in that tradition, and many of the works recorded here have the edge-of-the-seat feeling that one can get in the concert hall. Vengerov's lightning tempo in the last movement of the Tchaikovsky Concerto and the selections
Read more from Götterdämmerung are among the best on this album. The Beethoven Egmont Overture has great magnificence as well. It is very appropriate that so many opera selections were included on this concert, as Solti's opera recordings were among his finest. Solti was a powerful force during his lifetime, and this recording is a full-bodied and rich tribute. Read less
