Just as EMI has recycled Maria Callas recordings (how many times has the Callas/Sabata Tosca appeared on LP, cassette, and CD?), Decca is once again making Joan Sutherland?s recordings available. Recently, a deluxe six-CD set that presented an excellent retrospective of her recording career from 1959 through 1986 was issued. Through the years, her recordings not only appeared in their original issues, but reissues, and numerous compilations of selected material. The eight items on this Decca Eloquence album were not included in the six-disc retrospective, so do not fear duplication; nor were they in the similarly titled ?The Age of Bel Canto? (1964).

This album was initially released in 1986, just four years before her performance departure on New Years Eve in the act II gala of Die Fledermaus at Covent Garden. Considering that her singing career began in the mid 1940s, she?s in remarkably good voice in 1986. Whereas many singers lose their top notes, Sutherland?s remained. It was in her midrange that some of the luster of earlier years has occasionally been replaced by a hint of fatigue. Her singing on this album is sometimes a bit more cautious than it once was, the voice is occasionally not as fresh, but Sutherland remains a formidable and brilliant artist. She is still capable of dazzling passagework and squarely hits the high notes.

Except for Una voce poco fa , most of the material is not often found on recital albums. The selections from Donizetti?s Il castello di Kenilworth and Betly are especially scarce in the recorded literature. Lyrics to the eight selections are not included in the booklet, but Richard Bonynge contributes some brief information about the operas. The Decca Eloquence series offers these reissues at midprice, so if you missed them the first time around they are now kinder to the wallet. Since the selections have not circulated as much as some of her other recordings, the disc might be a worthy addition to your Sutherland collection.
