Notes and Editorial Reviews

Barenboim was 34 when he taped this slew of prime Franckiana in 1976?not yet the reliable baton wizard he would become. He?s a reporter, rather than a raconteur , issuing bulletins from the scene?scrappy, noisy, unbalanced, protesting too much. These are not bad performances, but one misses the smooth transitions, supple phrasing, and sure ear for the intended effect of Ansermet?s master hand distributing the sumptuousness of Les éolides . The symphonic interlude from Read more style="font-style:italic">Rédemption is heard to better advantage from Cluytens (long-playing Angel 36151) or Plasson (as part of the oratorio, EMI CDC 55056); Le chasseur maudit from, among others, Cluytens, Munch, Beecham, Pierre Fournet (Supraphon 11 0613), Paul Strauss (Ricercar RIC 009058/059), or Tadaaki Otaka; Psyché from attuned conductors going back to Gabriel Pierné and including Paul Strauss, Fournet, and Otaka (Chandos CHAN 9342, Fanfare 18:6)?the latter three giving the ballet at length. But the collector will want this for the gorgeous Ropartz orchestration of Nocturne (perhaps the best of Franck?s mélodies ) and because other performances of the Rédemption interlude are either long gone or impossible to find domestically. Superb notes by Julian Rushton, though Nocturne ?s poem is not included. Sound is upfront and richly detailed.
