Notes and Editorial Reviews

Gabriel Tacchino's fastidious recordings of Francis Poulenc's piano music date from 1966 to 1983 and have been issued several times on LP and CD, most notably and comprehensively on the 1988 double disc Oeuvres pour piano from EMI Music France. This EMI Encore CD includes the most popular of the pieces, such as the droll Trois mouvements perpétuels, the sentimental Trois Novellettes, the deceptively simple Suite française (d'apres Claude Gervais), and the delightful set of piano miniatures for children, Villageoises; yet the most characteristic and revealing of Poulenc's witty keyboard compositions, the Improvisations (15), are missing, no doubt due to the time constraints of a single disc. But there are two works not included Read more on the 1988 set that almost compensate, the spiky Sonate pour piano à quatre mains and the jocular L'embarquement pour Cythère, brilliantly performed by Tacchino and Jacques Fevrier in 1972. Completists will find this CD worth having for these rare recordings, even though the rest of the selections are duplicated on the double disc. However, as a representative compilation of Poulenc's fanciful and fun piano music, this disc should satisfy newcomers if the fuller collection is unavailable. The clear sound quality is identical to the previous release, without any signs of new remastering.
