Notes and Editorial Reviews

These are attractive performances of pleasant but ephemeral music. All of these quartets have two movements, a moderate opening (in all cases without tempo indication), followed by either a minuet, a fast finale, or a theme and variations. Most last not much longer than 10 minutes, total. The standout piece is No. 1 in D major, whose opening movement and variation finale are both quite substantial. That said, the Czech players offer intelligently paced, sensitive readings that put about as much character into the music as it can take. The engineering (by Arco Diva) is also quite good. These 1785 pieces give a good picture of cultured music-making in 18th century Paris, but let’s face it—this ain’t Haydn!
