Notes and Editorial Reviews

Ursula Oppens and Michael Gielen are fine exponents of Carter’s intriguingly complex music. With sympathetic support from the SWF Symphony Orchestra, Oppens gives an eloquent reading of the Piano Concerto, while Gielen directs a colourful performance of Carter’s richly layered Concerto for Orchestra. Notwithstanding some loss of focus in the loudest passages, reverberant recordings enhance the dramatic impact of the climaxes in both works. Vivid accounts of the Three Occasions for Orchestra complete this celebration of Carter’s fabulous sound-world.

A feast for mind, senses and heart November 18, 2012 By John Plant (Head of Jeddore, Nova Scotia) See All My Reviews "Unlike many contemporary composers of comparable complexity, Carter's music is delightfully easy to follow IF you allow yourself to trust it. It will take you to many unexpected and astonishing places, but it will never leave you in a dismal bleak morass where one rebarbative, meaningless sequence leads tiresomely to another. The perspective is always shifting, but it is also clearly etched and exuberantly outlined, offering continually renewed gestures which seem to spawn new universes as you listen. A wild, exhilarating ride. Carter just left us at the young age of 103; this music hints perhaps at the elan vital which supported such splendid and productive longevity." Report Abuse
