Notes and Editorial Reviews

This very well played and sung selection of music from Peer Gynt contains all of the major numbers save the lengthy melodramas with dialogue and a couple of the "action" pieces, such as Peer Gynt Hunted by the Trolls. It amounts to a bit more than an hour of music, which probably is as much as many listeners will need. Järvi very intelligently divides the two folk dances (Nos. 2 and 3), placing the second of them, the Springar, between No. 7 (a bit of dialogue for Peer) and No. 8 (In the Hall of the Mountain King). With Blomstedt's single-disc reference recording of the complete incidental music long unavailable, listeners looking for the vast majority of the score on one CD should seriously consider this release.
Grieg's music for Peer Gynt has a sort of built-in, perennial freshness, and Järvi's conducting captures that quality particularly well. His is a very theatrical interpretation, with plenty of excitement in the big numbers and playing from the Estonian orchestra that effectively captures the music's rustic tang. I'm thinking especially of some enthusiastic woodwind and percussion contributions in such numbers as the Dance of the Mountain King's Daughter, the Shipwreck, and the very lively Arabian Dance. The singing has this same vivid quality, with Camilla Tilling a fine Solveig. The sonics are warm as well as ample, making the score sound bigger-boned and grander than it often does, and this also adds to the involving experience. In short, this is an extremely enjoyable selection that, if not quite complete, is close enough and good enough to warrant serious attention for its own sake, especially for fans of this wonderful score.
