Notes and Editorial Reviews

Canny program builder that he is, Stephen Hough's keen curatorial touch informs every aspect of this retrospective compilation culled from his richly varied Hyperion discography. Chopin's A-flat Ballade makes an effective starter, especially with its gentle, conversational opening section. The intimate delicacy of Mompou's La fuente y la campana smoothly bridges into Ben Weber's thornier yet no less lyrical Fantasia. Hough effects an astute juxtaposition by placing the vigorous finales of Schubert's D.613 C major and Hummel's Op. 81 F-sharp minor sonatas back-to-back. In addition, Hough throws in two previously unreleased compositions of his own. Pining for the Spring Breeze is an effectively lush

His Suite Osmanthus consists of five character pieces whose inventive harmonic language reflects early 20th-century English Romanticism ŕ la Bax, Holst, and Scott. Hough saves the largest single-movement work for last: his own transcription of Franck's Third Organ Chorale. Hough considers this his favorite among his many recordings. Listening to this full-bodied, contrapuntally clear performance, you'd be inclined to agree. In all, a cogent overview of and ideal introduction to Stephen Hough's artistry. [6/8/2005]
