Notes and Editorial Reviews

Robert Schumann’s Overture to his musical accompaniment for Lord Byron’s poem, Manfred, is one of his finest pieces, and the veteran Carl Schuricht (1880–1967) drew an exceptionally stirring performance of it from the Orchestra of Radio Stuttgart in December 1960. This is my favorite performance in this estimable collection, and the only one in stereo. For admirers of the conductor and these composers, the rest of the program, recorded monophonically from 1954 to 1961, should also prove satisfying. Schuricht must have been especially fond of the rarely heard Overture, Scherzo, and Finale by Schumann. He recorded it 50 years ago with the Paris Conservatory Orchestra for London (English Decca), as B-side for a notable, and unusually brisk, Read more performance of Schumann’s “Rhenish” Symphony. For London, Schuricht and the Vienna Philharmonic recorded Mendelssohn’s concert overture, “ Fingal’s Cave,” along with two others (Ruy Blas, The Fair Melusina). As one would expect, the Vienna orchestra of 50 years ago produced a bigger and more brilliant sound than the Stuttgart RSO. The Stuttgart performances also deserve a hearing, being idiomatic and clearly recorded. No one should be without a complete recording of Mendelssohn’s charming incidental music for Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, including the two songs. But the three popular segments presented here are, as one would expect, entirely charming. This disc is Volume 15 in the SWR/Hänssler Schuricht Edition, surely the most extensive representation of the conductor’s art currently available.
