Here are two of the most recent collections of cantigas in the long series that Eduardo Paniagua has been recording for nearly two decades. The first disc has an unusual set of five cantigas on the major feasts of Our Lord, unusual because it has been entirely ignored until now. Along with the set of cantigas on the life of Mary ( Fanfare 20:5 and 29:3), it forms a second appendix to the Toledo codex. Higini Angles published a facsimile edition and commentary on the El Escorial codex j.b.2, the most accessible way to refer to the works, but it includes only the more familiar 400 cantigas. Two other cantigas in the first appendix are added to fill out the theme, sort of, since one touches on the month of May and the other on the Seven Sorrows of Mary.

The other disc turns up 13 cantigas that generally involve the Virgin rescuing victims of pirates and corsairs. The 16 tracks include several anonymous pieces. The stories of 11 cantigas that are sung are summarized, sometimes in a single sentence. This seems to be the first disc in the long series that does not supply full Galician texts and Spanish translations, as the first disc above does. It is also the first disc that betrays duplications, for Los Corsarios (CSM 379) is sung here with only five of the 10 verses on Cantigas de Sevilla (30:1), where it fit the theme just as well. Likewise, Sobre la Aguas de Marsella (CSM 236) uses four of the seven verses on Cantigas de Francia , where it also fits the theme. Mercader robado (CSM 193), sung with all 12 verses on Sequentia’s disc (16:5), is reduced to three verses here. I will have to catch up on my discography of the cantigas if I expect to sort out any more little details such as these. For those who regard the Cantigas as one of the monuments of medieval music, Paniagua’s ongoing aim of producing a complete recording deserves cheers and support, which will be rewarded by hearing these endlessly fascinating stories in song. Paniagua uses instruments liberally as always, so only a minority of competing discs can be found that forego accompaniment. Enjoy these varied and spirited performances.
