The window dedicated to the memory of Herbert Sumsion (1899 – 1995) in Gloucester Cathedral identifies him as ‘Composer and Cathedral Organist’. Most people know him as the latter who presided over The Three Choirs Festival when the likes of Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Finzi and Howells were among the festivals active participants. For the most part his compositions manifest the collision of his Victorian and Edwardian impulses and few have been heard or recorded. This is therefore the first of two volumes to redress these omissions.
