Notes and Editorial Reviews

Matthias Kirschnereit is a young German pianist who grew up in Namibia and later studied at the Detmold Music Academy; among the well-known artists who influenced his artistic development are Arrau, Perahia, Maisenberg, and Sandor Végh. He has been successful, although not a first prize-winner, in several major competitions (International Concours Géza Anda, Australian International Piano Competition), and his recordings of Mozart piano concertos and Mendelssohn piano music have won praise. Like Collins and Pescia, he shows a natural affinity for Schumann’s spirit in this well-rounded disc. His spare use of pedal and digital mastery provide clarity and transparency in his sound, and his varying dynamics underscore changes in Read more mood. The first movement of the Fantasy seems a little controlled, not quite “fantastic” enough; the second movement’s sharp rhythms are vivid, and the dreaded difficulties of the coda are rattled off with ease. The third movement is perfect—beautifully shaped, majestic and introspective at the same time. The three sharply contrasting pieces of Bunte Blätter—intimate, fiery, and swaggering in that order—are not often heard, and therefore all the more welcome. The Albumblätter of 1841 bring us back to the world of Schumann’s early piano pieces: small in scale, full of contrast, simple but expressive. They too are fairly rare in the Schumann concert repertoire. Warmly recommended.
