Several years ago, I raved about Holger Falk’s first album of Read more Poulenc songs (MDG 1658). Now I can rave equally about this one, which is Vol. 3. His complete identification with text and music remain, for me, almost miraculous, although here one can detect, now and again, the fact that he is a bit uncomfortable in the lowest range, where he just touches the notes. Nevertheless, his performances, supported beautifully by pianist Zuppardo, are models of breathing life and energy into these songs (listen, for instance, to the rambunctious energy of “Ballet” from the Poèmes de Ronsard ). Despite his difficulty with the lowest notes, I rush to assure you that Falk has a superb voice. Though light in weight, it has a bright quality that belies his German heritage: the voice actually does sound as much, if not more, French in timbre, and it is a better quality voice than that of Poulenc’s principal interpreter of his songs, Pierre Bernac. (You can compare them directly in Chansons gaillardes and the Deux Poèmes de Louis Aragon. ) Listen, particularly, to the way Falk can arch the voice upwards, producing soft, high singing of a quality I’ve not heard in nearly 40 years. And, as usual, he is locked in on the words of each song, giving each its just due. This is, quite simply, a fantastic disc.
