Notes and Editorial Reviews

...a rare opportunity to hear violinist Erika Morini, an exceptionally fine player whose sensitive handling of Tchaikovsky's Concerto is especially enjoyable.

-- Gramophone [1/1997]
reviewing the Tchaikovsky Concerto, previously reissued as MCA 80079

It is a moot point as to whether issues of gender played some part in the current neglect of artists such as ERICA MORINI, an Austrian-born violinist who spent most of her long career in the United States. Certainly her 1958 Westminster recordings of the Brahms and Tchaikovsky Concertos with the RPO under Artur Rodzinski are very fine indeed, presenting a violinist with a wonderfully sweet tone, impeccable intonation and a marvellous clarity
Read more of articulation. What is perhaps missing is a larger-than-life personality that stamps a specific interpretative character on these works, but one might argue that being a devoted servant to the music is far more important.

-- BBC Music Magazine
reviewing the Brahms and Tchaikovsky Concerti, previously reissued as DG 471200

I have heard Morini acoustics that reveal a firebrand of a technician; by the early 1960s when these sonatas were recorded the intensity is reduced but hardly eliminated. Her tightly focused, somewhat dry tone production had a slightly sour edge by 1961 to 1964, particularly as closely recorded by American Decca. Firkusny, by contrast, has a rich, deep sound—a bit bass-heavy, and over a small sound system the balances are unsatisfactory (they improve over a better system). Essentially, MCA gives us two very experienced recitalists having a tour through the center of the duo repertoire, and at MCA's low price even the collector worried about shelf space should seriously consider indulging himself. Even though repeats are an unfortunate casualty here, each of the Beethoven sonatas has a great deal to offer the listener... this is a valuable restoration to the catalog. MCA's vaults have Morini's stereo concerto recordings for Westminster and Decca as well. No ulterior motive—just thought I'd mention it. Nudge, nudge.
