Notes and Editorial Reviews

BACH Partita in c. Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue. BRAHMS Klavierstücke, opp. 118 and 119 Miku Nishimoto-Neubert (pn) SOLO MUSICA 195 (70:32)

These are elegant, smart performances of these familiar works. Nishimoto-Neubert, who was born in Tokyo and finished her musical education in Germany, is certainly somewhat cool emotionally, but in the case of both Bach and Brahms, there is enough character built into the Read more music that it does not need over-interpretation, and indeed, suffers from it. Nishimoto-Neubert is certainly not metronomic, although her rhythmic flexibility is subtle, but offers a bracing lucidity of texture accompanied by a ringing tone that makes her playing alert and even exciting. Tempos, I hasten to add, are never rushed. This is not an uncommon approach to Bach as played on a modern piano, but those accustomed to a more sentimental way with these great late piano gems from Brahms may at first find her manner distant. Repeated listening justifies her style; the music is carefully constructed so as to describe a complex and dramatically sculpted vision. It needn’t be milked for more, and once you hear Nishimoto-Neubert’s way with it you may not want to go back to your favorite old mushy performance.
