GRIEG Ballade in g. Six Lyric Pieces. Slåtter, op. 73. Piano Sonata. FRANCES-HOAD Contemplation (homage to Grieg) Ivana Gavric (pn) CHAMPS HILL 067 (66:02)

At the time of the Grieg birthday sesquicentennial in 1993, I was one of Fanfare ’s designated Read more Grieg reviewers, and ended up listening to an awful lot of the composer’s great solo piano music. There were excellent new recordings by Andsnes, Pletnev, Oppitz, Steen-Nokleberg and others, and wonderful rereleases of vintage performances by Gieseking, Gilels, and Rubinstein. This new recording from the young Sarajevo native Ivana Gavric easily belongs in that company. First of all, I am very taken by her selection of music. The two big works are here, the Sonata and the magnificent Ballade, surely one of the great solo piano works of the late 19th century. The selection of Lyric Pieces is tricky, because the choice is so vast, but this group of six, including the very popular Wedding Day at Troldhaugen , is excellent. Finally, there is the op. 73 Slåtter , one of Grieg’s last works, and a somewhat under-heard masterpiece. The music anticipates the folk based material of Bartók, in a way, with jagged rhythms and naïve dissonance.

The tiny Contemplation by the British Cheryl Frances-Hoad is a rather odd, if completely agreeable, postlude to the Grieg. Written for Ivana Gavric, it is essentially a brief musing upon a couple of chords from the slow movement of the Grieg Sonata. Gavric plays it with a dream-like serenity.

Gavric is a real poet of the piano. Her playing has a very natural flow, to the extent that it is easy to miss the actual subtlety of her phrasing, not to mention the sure virtuosity that is required to carry off the often challenging technical demands of the music. The eccentric rhythms of the Slåtter , which are actually transcriptions of country fiddle melodies, and the frequent embellishments in the Lyric Pieces , fall from her fingers like leaves from a tree. Her tone has a sensuous sheen. Yes, this is wonderful Grieg playing, but anyone interested in up and coming piano talent will want to hear this recital. I would love to hear her play Chopin.
