Magnificent Haydn Recording August 13, 2014 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "Volume 21 in the Hanssler Classics series was a long time coming, but the wait was worth it.... in spades. What a glorious recording this is! Symphonies 99 and 100, plus a gorgeous overture, literally explode out of your speakers with focused, sharp attacks that will really make you sit up and take notice (and maybe even knock your socks off if you're not careful!). In my view, conductor Thomas Fey and his excellent Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra have everything correct here. Haydn's late symphonies require the greatest attention to detail to bring out the multitude of musical treasures these sublime compositions contain. That's what one gets here, it seems to me. The HSO may be a relatively small chamber orchestra-sized ensemble, but the lean, sharp sound it produces more than holds its own with the world's greatest and lushest orchestras. The secret here is the palpable nimbleness and dexterity which Thomas Fey demands of his players.... and gets it. I am also very fond of Haydn recordings with large orchestras, but the approach taken by Thomas Fey and the HSO set a standard which I think Haydn himself would cherish. Volume 21 is clearly one of the very finest releases so far in the series; I'd be surprised if you don't agree. Highest recommendation." Report Abuse
