Celebrating British guitarist Julian Bream, Sony Classical issues a unique production of Bream’s forty long-playing recordings, each selection of works grouped as in the original LP version. In this presentation the evolution of Bream’s repertoire as demonstrated in the recording studio between 1960 and 1991 are clearly apparent. This collection is a truly historical compendium stretching from Renaissance masterpieces to the finest contemporary works written in the 20th century. The edition comes with 2 previously unreleased DVDs with two recitals, a documentary about Julian Bream, performances of the Julian Bream consort and interview footage.
Julian Bream was born in London in 1933. He has been proclaimed by many studentsRead more of classical music as the premier guitar and lute virtuoso of the 20th century. After studying piano, cello and composition at the Royal College of Music, he made his public debut in 1950, quickly winning fame for his technique and mastery of a wide range of musical styles. Bream’s first London concert took place at the Wigmore Hall in 1951. Since then he has led the life of a busy and successful musician, dividing his time between his country, the recording studio, and concert hall. His musical tastes are varied and his fame as a lute player is as great as his reputation as a guitarist. His repertoire on the guitar ranges from the Bach Chaconne to works by contemporary composers. In 1960, he founded the Julian Bream Consort, an ensemble of original instrument virtuosi which enjoyed astounding success in their chosen oeuvre, greatly revitalizing interest in the music of the Elizabethan era.

Wonderful presentation and soundOctober 16, 2013By Wayne F Brissette B. (Austin, TX)See All My Reviews"To be fair, I find classical guitar my favorite of all classical music and I owned two of these CDs individually prior to purchasing this set. But despite my prejudice, this is a must buy for anybody who enjoys classical guitar or the fabulous playing of Julian Bream. Upon opening the shipping box, the first thing that caught my eye was the quality and detail Sony put into this set. The hardbound book which contains a nice writeup on the CDs and DVDs in the box set, plus a track listing for each CD. The only complaint I have against a lot of the newly issued box sets, and this one included, is lack of linear notes from the original recordings (although I know some had limited linear note to start with). Each CD mimics the look of the old vinyl LP. Sony took the extra step and each CD has a very light 'groove' in the artwork, so when you run your finger over the picture of the LP it feels like a real vinyl LP would. Nice touch! The music, well it's wonderful. I have only made it through about half the CDs to this point, but no matter where I play them, the sound is incredible. When you consider the year that most of these were recorded you come to realize the care Sony took when issuing this collection. It goes without saying that you can notice a change in sound quality over the years, but like many of the newly reissues from the past, companies are taking the time to remaster them without over coloring the original sound. Listening to tracks from this collection and the individual CDs I have from several years ago proves to me that buying this set was the right decision. Thanks Sony for the wonderful collection of guitar and lute music."Report Abuse
